Description

This is an excellent opportunity for a Senior Automation Test Engineer to become the technical lead responsible for defining automation architecture and quality engineering standards across one of South Africa’s leading payments fintechs. You’ll take ownership of test automation strategy across multiple products, designing scalable frameworks, driving AI-assisted testing initiatives, and improving the reliability of real-time payment systems processing millions of transactions.

Based in Cape Town, paying up to R1.5M – R1.6M per annum.

THE ROLE

As the Senior Automation Engineer, you will take ownership of the organisation’s automation capability across multiple products and payment platforms.

You will design and build scalable UI and API automation frameworks using Playwright, integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines, and establish engineering practices that improve release confidence and delivery quality. Working closely with Engineering, Product, and DevOps teams, you will ensure testing and automation are considered early in the development lifecycle and embedded throughout the software delivery process.

A key focus of the role is advancing the organisation’s automation capability through AI-assisted testing, intelligent regression optimisation, contract testing, automation observability, and integration testing across distributed systems. You will also contribute to automation strategy, mentor engineers, and help establish quality engineering standards across the technology team.

This role offers the opportunity to work on complex, high-volume payment systems while defining how automation and quality engineering are implemented within one of South Africa’s leading fintech businesses.

THE REQUIREMENTS

8+ years’ experience in Automation Engineering, Quality Engineering, or Test Automation
Strong experience designing and building automation frameworks from scratch
Hands-on experience with Playwright for UI and API automation
Strong programming skills in C#, Java, or Python
Experience integrating automated testing into CI/CD pipelines (TeamCity, GitHub Actions, or similar)
Experience testing APIs, microservices, and distributed systems
Experience with contract testing and integration testing practices
Exposure to fintech, banking, payments, or transactional systems
Experience working with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
Knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes
