This Senior Backend Engineer role is Cape Town-based (hybrid working) with a CTC of R1,3 – R1,6 million per year.

THE ROLE
As Senior Backend Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing serverless backend systems on AWS using Node.js, supporting high scale fintech products used by millions of customers. The role centres on owning API-first and event-driven services, working closely with product and frontend teams to deliver reliable, production-grade solutions.
You’ll take end-to-end ownership of services, from architecture and implementation through to scalability, performance, and production stability. You will actively shape technical patterns, standards, and architectural decisions rather than simply implementing predefined designs.
REQUIREMENTS
- Relevant degree, or equivalent work experience
- Strong backend engineering experience using Node.js, delivering production-grade APIs & services in high-availability environments.
- 4+ years’ experience designing and operating serverless architectures on AWS (e.g. Lambda, API Gateway, event-driven services).
- Solid understanding of API-first and event-driven system design.
- Proven ability to design and work with SQL and/or NoSQL databases, with a focus on performance and scalability.
- AWS certifications will be beneficial
